Gruene Saves Its Biggest Holiday Day for the First Saturday in December

November 5, 2026

Gruene's holiday season runs about eight weeks this year. It began with the Sip-N-Shop kickoff on November 5 and ends with free shows at Gruene Hall on New Year's Day. The district's oldest holiday traditions use just one of those days.

On Saturday, December 5, the 25th Annual Gruene Pony Express Ride arrives at 10am. Christmas Market Days opens at the same hour. A brass band starts at 5pm, and the 43rd Annual Gruene Town Lighting follows at 6pm. At 8pm, Gruene Hall has a Django Walker and Jerry Jeff Walker Band tribute. Most of the other dates on the calendar are newer events that fill the weeks around that Saturday. The ice rink is in only its third winter. If you already live nearby, December 5 is the day to plan by the clock.

The Day, Hour by Hour

Here's how the Saturday runs, based on the official Gruene holidays calendar and Gruene Hall's December lineup:

  1. 10am: The Pony Express rider arrives, and the temporary post office opens next to Gruene Outfitters.
  2. 10am to 5pm: Christmas Market Days, with nearly 100 vendors and free admission.
  3. During the day: Photos with Cowboy Kringle, by reservation.
  4. 5pm: The brass band plays on the street.
  5. 6pm: The Town Lighting, with Cowboy Kringle riding in on horseback.
  6. 8pm: The Django Walker and Jerry Jeff Walker Band tribute at Gruene Hall.

The order matters. The morning event works best if you bring something with you, and the evening event works best if you're already in town when it starts.

Bring Your Christmas Cards at 10am

The Pony Express Ride delivers a message. Riders from the Heritage Trail Ride Association of New Braunfels carry a "Christmas Greetings" message from the Governor of Texas into the historic district. The official event listing explains what to do with your mail:

"A temporary Post Office will be set up next to Gruene Outfitters in Gruene to cancel stamps for mailing. Bring your Christmas cards to have the stamps cancelled with the commemorative stamp representing Gruene."

That makes the ride the only event of the day where planning ahead changes what you take home. If your cards are addressed and stamped by Saturday morning, they go out with a Gruene cancellation. If they're still in the box on the kitchen counter, they don't.

The ride has run for a quarter century. The Herald-Zeitung's photo coverage of the 20th annual ride on December 4, 2021, shows Heritage Trail Ride Association riders coming through Gruene. It also shows former New Braunfels mayor and district judge Bruce Boyer reading the governor's greeting, and a letter to Santa getting the commemorative cancellation at the temporary post office. Five years later, this Saturday's ride is the 25th.

The Market's Last Weekend Fills the Middle of the Day

Old Gruene Market Days follows a fixed pattern. It runs the third full weekend of each month from February through November, then once more on the first weekend of December. That makes December 5 and 6 the market's final weekend of 2026, and its first holiday weekend.

The official market page lists nearly 100 artisans, set up in front of Gruene Coffee Haus, with free admission and free parking from 10am to 5pm. The holiday listing describes the vendors as selling handcrafted items and packaged Texas foods. If you shop the November market on the 21st and 22nd and want to go back for gifts, this is your last chance until February.

Cowboy Kringle, Gruene's own take on Santa, does photos that same weekend. Reservations are encouraged for photo packages and Christmas cards through CowboyKringle.com or by phone at (830) 606-1601. If you book a late-afternoon slot, the 5pm brass band starts right as the market closes, so there's no gap to fill.

Why It's Worth Staying Past 5pm

The official description says Gruene "closes out the many festivities of the day" with the Town Lighting, starting with the brass band at 5pm. Then comes the lighting at 6pm, when Cowboy Kringle rides into town on horseback and hands out candy canes to the kids. Admission is free. This is the 43rd year.

Parking has gotten easier for evenings like this. MySA reported that an 800-space paved lot opened along Gruene Road in 2025, near Gruene Hall and the Gristmill. It replaced uneven, flood-prone parking areas and was meant to cut down on roadside parking across the district. If you park once in the morning for the Pony Express, you can walk to everything else that day.

After the lighting, Gruene Hall's 8pm show is a Django Walker and Jerry Jeff Walker Band tribute. That's two hours after the lights come on, which leaves time for dinner in the district.

Wassailfest Comes Two Days Earlier

New Braunfels holds its own holiday evening earlier the same week. The city lists Wassailfest for Thursday, December 3, from 6 to 9pm at Main Plaza. The two don't overlap, so you can do downtown on Thursday night and Gruene on Saturday.

The Newer Events Around December 5

Gruene's season is long because of what's been added around the old traditions. The biggest addition is the Gruene Ice Rink. Community Impact covered its first season in November 2024, so this year is its third.

According to the rink's official page, it runs November 20 through January 3. It's a 100-by-40-foot rink behind The Pomegranate, near H.D. Gruene Jr.'s Private Office, set up alongside Gruene Mini Golf. Rental skates go from small children's sizes up to men's 15. Dolphin skate aids let a beginner sit or push while someone else does the work. If it rains, you can move your ticket to another time. Geoji owns and runs the rink. You don't need a reservation to hang out, shop and eat around it, only to skate.

Shops are part of the newer layer too. Kringle Cash coupons are good at shops around the historic district from November 5 through December 20. From November 14 through December 31, buying $100 in gift cards on site at participating locations gets you $5 to $10 off a later visit. H.D. Gruene Mercantile opened on March 27 at 1607 Hunter Road, in the historic building that was home to Gruene Antique Company. This is its first holiday season, with an open house on November 15 and a Ladies Night Out on November 19.

Both Pat Green New Year's Eve shows are $95, with advance tickets recommended.

The district has events nearly every week of the season, but the Pony Express and the Town Lighting both happen once, on December 5, between 10am and 6pm.
